TODAY: Tell our senators we need a Farm Bill that protects SNAP

Last year, Congress passed H.R.1, a law that included the largest cut to SNAP (known in Vermont as 3SquaresVT) in the program’s history. H.R.1, stripped $187 billion from the program and since its enactment in July 2025, more than 3.5 million people have lost access.

In Vermont, more than 4,500 people have lost access. Still, nearly 60,000 people are tapped into 3SquaresVT, an essential source of support to afford groceries.

Vermont’s senators and representative know the deeply harmful impact of H.R.1 on our communities across the state and are working hard to hold the line on protecting SNAP. But in order to do this, they need to hear from YOU.

Right now, the Senate is taking up the Farm Bill—a bill that determines funding and rules for many federal nutrition programs, including SNAP. Senator Bernie Sanders and Senator Peter Welch need to hear why YOU care about protecting SNAP for the nearly 10% of Vermonters who access this support to afford food.

In April, the U.S. House passed a Farm Bill that does nothing to reverse that damage. We thank Representative Becca Balint for standing up against this bill.

Now, the U.S. Senate will be developing its own version of the Farm Bill.

The Farm Bill is supposed to be a commitment to both farmers and families—and we need the Senate to keep that promise. We are calling on senators to only support a farm bill that fully restores funding cuts to SNAP, reinstates exemptions to work related time limits for vulnerable SNAP participants, and shields states from shouldering millions of dollars in new costs.

SNAP is our most effective and efficient food security program in the country, and our senators need to hear from all of us about the power of this program. Senator Welch sits on the Senate Agriculture Committee and is working NOW to advocate for a Farm Bill that protects SNAP. Now is the time to share our stories to support this effort.
