Hunger Free Vermont organizes 10 regional Food Security Networks, coalitions of partners across the state who care about creating food security in our communities.

These groups work together to share information and resources, raise awareness, brainstorm solutions, and build effective collaborations.

No matter where you live in Vermont, there's a local group of people working to improve food security for their neighbors.

Across Vermont, Food Security Networks bring together local leaders, organizations, and advocates working to create food security in their communities. By meeting regularly to share updates, lift up local challenges, and coordinate advocacy, they help communities and policymakers take meaningful action. With more than 1,100 Council members contributing their insights and lived experiences, these networks are shaping real, lasting solutions that make Vermont stronger. Together with Hunger Free Vermont and partners statewide, they are building a future where every person has reliable access to good food.

You can join a local Food Security Network by requesting to be added to a listserv of your choice! These email listservs are a great place to ask for and share information, publicize food systems opportunities, and of course, learn how to join a Food Security Network:

Updates to Hunger Free VT’s Hunger Councils & The Food Security Roadmap:

Twenty years ago, Hunger Free Vermont created the first two Hunger Councils as community-based groups designed to respond effectively to successive waves of food security challenges.

In 2024, in collaboration with the Vermont Farm to Plate Network and the formerly named Hunger Councils of Vermont, we launched a statewide conversation to develop the Vermont Farm to Plate Food Security Roadmap to 2035. As part of this process, we renamed the Hunger Councils “Food Security Networks,” reflecting our collective focus on the future we are striving to create, and the essential connecting roles played by these regional volunteer groups. The Vermont Food Security Roadmap lays out the bold actions required to create true food security for all of us in Vermont in the coming ten years.

Hunger Free Vermont is committed to working with the Food Security Roadmap Coalition to integrate food security measures into town planning, infrastructure development, emergency preparedness, and more. By partnering closely with local communities, we can ensure the goals and objectives of the Food Security Roadmap are implemented in a coordinated and accountable way, making a food secure Vermont possible.

As part of this effort, we are reimagining the Council network as key hubs for community-centered advocacy, aligning with our broader shift toward centering the voices of those most impacted by hunger. In early 2025, through a collaborative process with coalition partners, the Hunger Councils were officially renamed the Vermont Food Security Networks and given a new logo.

The Food Security Networks of Vermont are committed to providing inspirational leadership in eliminating the root causes of hunger by 2035, while continuing to support food security programs to those most impacted in the meantime.
