Over the next several years, Hunger Free Vermont will advocate for policies that aim to achieve the best possible outcomes for everyone living in Vermont, following these three pillars:

Provide concrete support to the most vulnerable groups in Vermont to ensure they have basic needs met.

Maximize and leverage federal funding wherever possible.

When the State of Vermont steps into leadership for food security, our collective action will be successful.

In the 2026 State Legislative Session, Hunger Free Vermont will work to maximize and leverage federal funding by requesting that the State appropriate additional administrative funding for 3SquaresVT (SNAP), in response to new federal funding requirements as laid out in H.R.1 (aka the “One Big Beautiful Bill”). Vermont must invest the necessary resources to ensure this program continues to operate effectively and efficiently for Vermonters. Despite harmful changes to this program, 3SquaresVT remains our state’s most effective and efficient program to reduce hunger and poverty.

We are also working to maximize and leverage federal funding in child nutrition programs. Hunger Free Vermont requests that the State provide funding to the sponsoring organizations of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). This appropriation will mean that more Family Child Care Home programs will be able to draw down federal funding to provide free meals and snacks to all children in their care. Ensuring that very young children have access to nutritious meals and snacks in their child care settings builds a brighter future for our State, relieves stress in families and creates a better environment in the child care setting.

Everyone has a role to play to achieve food security for all who live in Vermont. That’s why we are proud to work with our partners in the following advocacy coalitions:
