Marc Mihaly
Democratic Candidate for Vermont House of Representatives in the Washington-6 District
What do you believe is the role of state government, if any, in ensuring that everyone living in Vermont has the food they need to thrive?
Neither the "free" market nor charitable donations are sufficient to provide sufficient food to all Vermonters. Federal support is crumbling. That's why we need as much state support as is feasible.
What would be your policy priorities to move Vermont toward food security for all?
I support Universal School Meals, provisions in the budget to support Crop Cash, Farm Share.
What do you believe are the root causes of hunger, and what should the state do to address those underlying factors?
Terrible distribution of income. Many Vermonters simply don't have the income to provide the basics: food, shelter and transportation.
How would you help strengthen the state’s agriculture and food economy to ensure Vermont farms can continue to grow the food we all need?
I support pro-farm legislation including right to farm and assistance with farm labor. I support state action to the extent that we have any control over market price set nationally and internationally. I was on the board of the Vermont Land Trust for a decade and still support efforts of farmers to preserve their farming way of life.
