Jana Brown
Democratic Candidate for Vermont House of Representatives in the Chittenden-1 District
What do you believe is the role of state government, if any, in ensuring that everyone living in Vermont has the food they need to thrive?
Yes. As rates of food insecurity increase and affordability is a top issue for Vermonters, it is essential that we support food access.
What would be your policy priorities to move Vermont toward food security for all?
In my role as a state representative, I've strongly supported universal school meals, CCFAP funding, and other investments.
What do you believe are the root causes of hunger, and what should the state do to address those underlying factors?
As the cost of living increases and more Vermonters are struggling to afford basic needs, rates of hunger also increase. The expense of housing, health care, transportation, etc. consume larger and larger chunks of a family or individual budget. The legislature continues to try and make progress on affordability issues and in the meantime, supporting our food networks is essential.
How would you help strengthen the state’s agriculture and food economy to ensure Vermont farms can continue to grow the food we all need?
I've supported local food investment programs.
