What do you believe is the role of state government, if any, in ensuring that everyone living in Vermont has the food they need to thrive?
States have a role in ensuring the welfare of their residents, including food-aid, but in the past could rely on federal assistance. These are difficult times with the changes in federal food programs. States should step in to cover gaps, but that will require funding. Since the federal changes did not include reduced taxes for most people, increasing state taxes to fill gaps will be difficult. Steps like increasing the minimum wage can help and don't impose new taxes on residents.
What would be your policy priorities to move Vermont toward food security for all?
My priorities would focus on working with existing organizations such as the Meals on Wheels providers, Vermont Food Bank, Salvation Farms, and others by providing them with additional resources to further their mission. Supporting the Summer EBT program for children would also be important to me.
What do you believe are the root causes of hunger, and what should the state do to address those underlying factors?
The underlying causes are policy decisions over the years that prioritized profits over people. I support raising the minimum wage to $20 an hour. I also support increasing taxes on high income and very wealthy Vermonters to provide resources for programs that serve those who are less fortunate.
How would you help strengthen the state’s agriculture and food economy to ensure Vermont farms can continue to grow the food we all need?
Although I recognize the problems exist, I don't have deep experience with these issues. My first action would be to reach out to farmers to better understand their challenges and listen to their concerns, as well as to get their ideas on what would help.
