What do you believe is the role of state government, if any, in ensuring that everyone living in Vermont has the food they need to thrive?
There is no doubt that our state government has a role in addressing food insecurity. Whether it is through administering 3SquaresVT (SNAP), our universal school lunch program, summer feeding efforts, and more, we must support our neighbors and prevent Vermonters from being hungry.
What would be your policy priorities to move Vermont toward food security for all?
I want to ensure that, as a state, Vermont educates and supports Vermonters as to the benefits available to them to combat food insecurity. The community-based benefit assisters is one way this work can be accomplished. Additionally, maintaining our Universal School Meals program is about as direct an approach as is possible to address hunger. Finally, I think the Farm Share program is a great example of supporting Vermont's farm community, promoting quality food is available, and community engagement.
What do you believe are the root causes of hunger, and what should the state do to address those underlying factors?
When considering the root causes of food insecurity I think of both the financial and access reasons. The reality is that Vermont is an expensive place to live, driven significantly by housing and health care costs. Every step we make in addressing those issues help keep money in the pockets of hungry Vermonters. Additionally, continued support for our farm community -- which is decentralized and local -- will help. This support can make a direct connection between farmers and those facing food insecurity.
