Fancy Food Names Activity
Explanation and Video Links (school-based series only): This activity, called Fancy Food Names, is based on research that shows that creating a “smarter lunchroom” increases consumption of healthier foods. During this activity, participants create fun names for menu items offered in their school cafeteria and are expected to create signs, which should be displayed for 1 month in the lunchroom. It’s great to invite your school cook to be present during this activity (located in Lesson 6 in the Young Adult curriculum) so they can help implement the signs in the cafeteria. The purpose of this activity is to expand the reach of TLK in hopes of promoting healthy behavior change in the broader school environment.
These recipe cards can be printed and provided to participants to reinforce the cooking skills they practice in class. All "Suggested Recipes" from the curriculum are provided here in card format. We recommend providing students with 12 recipe cards on a ring.
Sometimes, grant funders will require recipients to submit data or other information demonstrating the outcomes of the program being funding and its success. These materials can be administered throughout The Learning Kitchen then submitted to funders.
This 16 question outcome evaluation is administered at the first and last class to measure changes in dietary behaviors of participants. Hosts should provide double-sided color copies on 11" x 17" paper which is folded in half for all participants to ensure consistency.
This two-question survey is intended to evaluate positive changes in consumption of fruits and vegetables, specifically. The half sheet is to be distributed to participants after the final class. These evaluations can either be copied and distributed to every participant or the class can be surveyed and respondent numbers can be collected for each response.
