Recess Before Lunch
For younger students, moving recess before lunch has proven successful in improving cafeteria atmosphere. Students are more relaxed and focused on eating (rather than the playground) and are better prepared to learn when they return to the classroom.
Adequate Time to Eat
Ensuring students have at least 15 minutes of seat time during meal services is a best practice. Crunchy carrots require more time to eat than fries!
Smarter Lunchrooms Movement
The Smarter Lunchrooms Movement is a project of the Cornell Center for Behavioral Economics in Child Nutrition Programs (the BEN Center). They provide strategies for free or low-cost solutions that nudge students to make healthy choices in the cafeteria.
