SCHOOL MEALS

We believe in equality in the cafeteria. Our vision for school meals is that no child is segregated by their family's income and that school meal programs are built into the school curriculum - teaching healthy eating and creating localvores for life.

We offer Training & CUSTOMIZED assistance to School Administrators & Food Service PERSONNEL

We help schools:

  • Establish school breakfast and lunch programs
  • Implement Universal Free School Meals through the federal programs available to schools in areas of high need: Community Eligibility Provision and Provision 2
  • Improve food quality of food by training on best practices for increasing participation and connecting with farm to school resources

School administrators and food service personnel looking for detailed information and resources can visit our school meals resource hub here:

WE advocate at the federal & State level to protect and improve school meals

Some key school meals legislation for which we have advocated:

  • In 2003, Act 22 was passed requiring all Vermont public schools to participate in the school lunch and breakfast program unless the school board votes to exempt the district from the requirement.
  • In 2008, the Vermont State Legislature eliminated the reduced price category for school breakfast so that all students from low-income households can eat breakfast for free, leading to an 85% increase in participation.
  • In 2013, with the Governor's support, the Vermont State Legislature eliminated the reduced price category for school lunch so that all students from low-income households can eat lunch for free.
