Hunger Free Vermont, formerly the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger, is an education and advocacy organization with the mission to end the injustice of hunger and malnutrition for all Vermonters. Incorporated in 1993, we are a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to hunger prevention through expanding access to nutrition programs that nourish Vermont’s children and families.
Read our 2010-2015 Strategic Plan.
Our 16-member staff operates six programs that support a comprehensive and effective approach to addressing hunger in our state:
- School Meal Expansion assists schools in establishing and expanding school breakfast and lunch programs, which provide reliable sources of nutrition for school age children.
- 3SquaresVT Outreach improved access to and particpation in 3SquaresVT (formerly the Food Stamp Program) which is one of the most reliable, consistent and dignified means to prevent hunger.
- The Learning Kitchen (formerly Cooking for Life) empowers low-income Vermonters to make healthy choices through nutrition education, emphasizing the importance of regular physical activity, and improving cooking skills.
- Out-of-School Time Nutrition establishes and expands opportunities for children to eat nutritious snacks and meals after school hours and during the summer months.
- Early Childhood Nutrition Outreach helps child care centers provide nutritious meals through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
These initiatives, along with our advocacy and public education efforts, identify and eliminate barriers to participation in state and federal nutrition programs and respond to gaps in services.
